Sanford Smith Fine Art Current Art Exhibitions

Stephen Williams

May 01, 2012 - May 31, 2012

Sanford Smith Fine Art is pleased to welcome back Stephen Williams and his fine black and white silver gelatin photographs. Williams trained in the classical tradition with iconic members of the trade- Ansel Adams and Paul Caponigro among them. He started as a photo journalist after graduating from The University of Kansas. The subjects closest to his heart are the ones that are vanishing before our eyes- the Canadian Inuit, the American Cowboy, the Shakers in Sabbathday Lake, Maine.

Williams’s strength as a visual anthropologist has been acknowledged by the many publications his work has appeared in. They include The New York Times, Life Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Camera and The Christian Science Monitor among others. Williams has published several books, notably The Chosen Land and In The Middle – the former discussing the last of the Shakers, the latter the last of the Inuit culture in Canada.

Williams served as Director of The Photography Place in Philadelphia for eleven years. He was an associate professor of photography at Rosemount College and at the University of Delaware. His work is in many private and corporate collections: The Museum of American Folk Art, Haverford College, The Cleveland Art Museum, The International Center For Photography, The Paine Webber Collection, to name a few.

“Respected Nature” will be on exhibit at Sanford Smith through May 31st.
