Maud Bryt was born in New York City in 1965. She was educated at The Spence School and The Phillips Exeter Academy, before continuing on to graduate cum laude from Harvard in 1987. Bryt worked as a freelance photographer for several years- her clients included J. Crew, Parents, and Mademoiselle among others. After publishing Baby Love: A Tradition of Calm Parenting in 1998, Bryt returned to her lifelong interest in painting and began years of serious study with well known artists at both the National Academy and the New York Studio School. Bryt studied oil painting and pastel with Sharon Sprung, Michele LiCalsi, Lorraine Shemesh and Wolf Kahn. She is currently studying drawing with Graham Nickson, John Lees and Ron Milewicz.
Bryt has shown with the Atlantic Gallery in New York and with Hoorn-Ashby both in Nantucket and in New York City. She currently resides in New York with her husband and her two teenage daughters. Bryt’s subject matter for this summer’s show revolves around her family’s connection to Otis- here in Berkshire County. Bryt has captured family members in simple action -their strength of character and warm personalities revealed through gestures in their portraits. Equally strong are Bryt’s architectural landscapes: she has painted the blooming June peonies as eloquently as she has layered the snow on winter barns. “Otis” evokes images of a time gone by- of perfection and simplicity that provides an ideal retreat for the summer of 2010.
