Cecil Bell was born in Seattle in 1906. Bell’s artistic talent was apparent from a young age. By the time he reached Stadium High School in Tacoma – the extent of his formal education – he was already a veteran cartoonist. Bell was absorbed in documenting everyday places and people. In 1930, he enrolled at the Art Students League, and studied lithography and composition, life drawing, and illustration. By the late 1930s, Bell’s career really began to take off, and he has since been beloved as the man who painted his way through Prohibition, the Great Depression and World War II, portraying the activities he observed and maintaining his own unique style. Bell died in 1970.
