Richard Stankiewicz

Richard Stankiewicz’s welded sculpture of rusted iron and cast-off steel played an important role in the redefinition of art in New York during the 1950s. Yet, as is the case of several artists who figured significantly in that heady decade when the New York School came to international prominence, the full range of Stankiewicz’s art has not been fully appreciated. Born in Philadelphia in 1922, Stankiewicz grew up in Detroit and enlisted in the US Navy in 1941. During his time he experimented in sculpture using natural materials, and tried his hand at painting. Shortly after his return to Detroit, Stankiewicz moved to New York and enrolled at the Hans Holfmann School of Fine arts. By 1953, he was already showing his famous assemblage ‘junk sculptures.’
